![]() Waters fueled the band’s golden years, conceiving such epics as Wish You Were Here and The Wall, but the band survived his departure in the ’80s, with guitarist David Gilmour stepping to the forefront on A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. That 1973 concept album distilled the wild psychedelia of their early years - that brief, heady period when they were fronted by Syd Barrett - into a slow, sculpted, widescreen epic masterminded by Roger Waters, the bassist who was the band’s de facto leader in the ’70s. Of these concept albums, Dark Side of the Moon resonated strongest, earning new audiences year after year, decade after decade, and its longevity makes sense. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the ’70s. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. With Deadliest Stings: Greatest Hits already carrying a hefty price tag since it's a hard-to-find import, it's best to skip over this downright strangely assembled collection in favor of one that contains all of their true classics. Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. And to add insult to injury, in their place are such less-than-stellar ditties as "When the Smoke is Going Down," "What U Give U Get Back," and inexplicably, a cover of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" (instead of one of their own tracks). In other words, while it does contain "Rock You Like a Hurricane," "Wind of Change," and "Still Loving You," such key Scorps tracks as "No One Like You," "Blackout," and "Big City Nights" are nowhere to be found. Comprised of two discs, one is a "VCD" disc, which are karaoke versions of Scorpions classics! And the other disc turns out to be a single-disc of hits, but the only problem is that it's light on the true hits. One of the oddest Scorpions "best-of" collections would have to be the 2007 Asian import, Deadliest Stings: Greatest Hits. ![]()
